Since Ferrari’s earliest days as a manufacturer, California has been one of the company’s major markets. During the production of the Ferrari 250, they even made an open-top model aimed at buyers in the Golden State- the 250 GT California Spyder- which was then followed by the 365 California in 1966. These front-engine convertibles have become some of the most valuable cars in the world, so it made sense when Ferrari was looking to name its new front-engine convertible to bring the California moniker back. First shown at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the new Ferrari California was a departure for the brand, its first use of a V8 placed in the front, as well as the company’s first-ever power retractable hard top. Intended as an entry-level vehicle for the brand, the California was priced similarly to its F430 stablemate but aimed at a vastly different buyer. Whereas the mid-engine F430 buyer was looking for more outright performance, the California buyer wanted an elegant grand touring car that could be used for long road trips in great comfort. This 2010 Ferrari California was delivered new to Italy through the dealer Samocar, and has been under the care of two owners from new. Specified in a stunning shade called Grigio Ingrid, this is one of the best colors on the California and gives it an appropriately up-scale appearance. Showing 66,344 km at the time of cataloging, this car looks more like a car with 20,000 km and has been kept in exceptional condition both inside and out. The 20” 5-spoke alloy wheels were the standard wheels on the updated California 30, and tie the exterior together nicely - especially when paired with the carbon ceramic brakes with yellow calipers behind them. One of the key features of California is the convertible roof- unlike every Ferrari convertible before it, which was fitted with a fabric soft top, the California features a unique folding metal roof that makes for a coupe-like driving experience with the roof up yet offers all of the fun of top-down motoring. The interior is completely wrapped in Rosso leather, which provides an exceptional contrast against the champagne-colored exterior. This bright red leather encases nearly everything from the seats, to the door cards, the windshield surround and even the dash board. There is some aluminum trim on the wheel and central bridge, and all of the soft touch buttons have been recoated to do away with the notorious stickiness. These seats are fitted with full power adjustment as well as seat heaters and 3-position memory, which are not inexpensive options on this car. Sitting in front of the driver is a perfectly sized 3-spoke steering wheel in red with aluminum shift paddles and the legendary “Manettino” drive mode selector sits opposite the big red engine start button. A large yellow tachometer dominates the gauge cluster and to its left, a color LCD screen provides you with information about the car, including tire pressure monitoring, fuel level, and drive mode setup. Powering the California is a 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 that produces 453 horsepower and 358 lb-ft of torque and pulls to nearly 8,000 rpm. The California has many firsts for Ferrari, including the first use of direct fuel injection, which helps this engine produce a staggering 106 horsepower per liter of displacement. This was also the first Ferrari ever to be fitted with a double-clutch gearbox- which is now a standard feature across the brand’s lineup. This transaxle setup means near-instantaneous shifting while driving in a sporting manner but also offers all the convenience of an automatic around town. Additionally, the combination of a front-mid engine design and the double clutch transaxle at the rear means a near-ideal 47/53 front/rear weight distribution. Although the Ferrari California wasn’t designed for outright performance, it still is exceptionally fast, with 0-100 km/h in less than 4 seconds and a top speed of 310 km/h, putting the performance on par with its F430 counterpart. Ferrari is known for making fast cars that are great on the track, but their road car legacy truly begins with grand touring coupes. This California continues that legacy and offers all of the practicality and luxury you could hope for, paired with tremendous performance that will always put a smile on your face. Offered in a great color combination and with two careful owners from new, this 2010 California is not one to pass up.
